Our Vision
For Our Students
Our vision is for every Jungman student to empower one another to discover and expand their knowledge, to strive and push one another towards greatness. To become resourceful leaders and problem solvers with the power to make real change in the complex world in which we live.
Our Mission
Founded in 1902, Jungman Elementary School has been a pillar for the Pilsen community since its inception. At Jungman, we welcome and treat everyone fairly, acting with integrity to support our Jungman family. We are advocates working hard with a positive mindset to provide an exceptional educational experience through the use of STEM-based foundations and principles which inspire our “STEMists” to become successful lifelong learners.
Diversity statement
At Jungman STEM Magnet School, we are deeply committed to building a school community that reflects, respects, and uplifts the rich diversity of our city. We believe that ending minority group isolation and embracing the full spectrum of student backgrounds—including race, ethnicity, language, socioeconomic status, gender identity, ability, and lived experience—is not only our responsibility but also our strength.
We intentionally cultivate a learning environment where students from all walks of life empower one another to discover and expand their knowledge. Our vision centers on students striving toward greatness, becoming resourceful leaders and problem solvers equipped to make meaningful change in our complex world.
We promote equity and inclusion through:
- Equitable access to rigorous, STEM-focused curriculum that prepares all students for future academic and career success
- Inclusive and purposeful participation in STEM programming, extracurricular activities, and enrichment opportunities
- A culturally responsive approach to teaching and social-emotional learning that affirms student identities and experiences
- Ongoing reflection, dialogue, and collaboration to ensure all members of our school community feel seen, heard, and valued
At Jungman, diversity is more than a goal—it is a vital part of who we are and who we strive to become: a vibrant, inclusive, and united school community where every student thrives.

Jungman's History
In 1902, a Chicago Public School was built at 18th & Miller Streets in Pilsen due to serious overcrowding. The school still stands till this day as the Joseph J. Jungman STEM Magnet School. For nearly 120 years it has been a source of stability through tumultuous times such as World War II, the Great Depression, and most recently the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Located in the heart of Chicago's culturally rich and diverse Pilsen neighborhood, this iconic building was designed by city of Chicago Board of Education Architect William B. Mundie. Eventually, Mundie’s building would serve to honor namesake; Joseph J. Jungman, a Czech poet, linguist and activist, who made Chicago his home.
Just as Mundie’s building has withstood the tests of time, so has our school. The staff of Jungman is committed to being the best STEM school in Chicago and beyond. And although being situated in one of Chicago's most diverse and ever-changing neighborhoods can sometimes seem like there are more challenges than opportunities available, our teachers work tirelessly every day toward creating an environment where students feel safe enough to take on new challenges head on, continuing Mundie’s legacy of strength and resilience.
